Creation of the site-specific art collection
for New York University in Abu Dhabi

An international victory. From the synergy between Abu Dhabi’s vocation for the future and the prestige of one of the world’s leading universities a campus arose that will be the cultural hub of the Middle East. A real city of culture that rises in Abu Dhabi, next to the new Louvre. A campus that hosts more than 5,000 people: with a majestic library, three theatres and an art gallery. As finalists of an international selection, in 2012 we were invited to Abu Dhabi. We held technical and commercial talks with faculty and government representatives. They chose us.

Art as an educational tool in one of the world’s leading universities. We have been working for three years alongside an academic and governmental commission, dealing with public art theory and ethics. We have thus developed the concept of a collection that includes monumental installations by some of the most important artists in the world: from Antony Gormley to Giuseppe Penone, from Tomás Saraceno to Richard Long. On the New York University campus art is a powerful part of a cultural machine, which aims to train a community of young people from 100 different countries. Not only masterpieces are needed but works of art capable of stimulating reflection, at the same time respecting the strictest criteria of environmental sustainability and safety, resistance to severe climatic factors and ease of maintenance.

A continuous challenge, cultural and technical. We dealt with design, complex installations, conservative problems. The New York University campus was the open-air laboratory of a unique experience in the world. With our experience and our international network, we were the right team to solve the countless problems created by a huge space, a complex architecture and with its very particular needs for use and safety.
Thanks to our network of contacts we have been able to establish dialogues with artists active in all sectors: from monumental outdoor or indoor installations to photography, from land art to interactive art, right up to augmented reality. It is a dialogue that continues.
